the plot thickens

ok, i just called another nanny to set up an interview and -- i swear on my own future grave -- her outgoing message was the percy sledge's "when a man loves a woman."

let us leave aside the fact, for now, that "WAMLAW" is an execrable piece of trash -- i never liked that song. (if you want good percy sledge, check out "baby help me.") so if i were making this personnel decision based solely on musical taste, the marvin gaye nanny would win on the downbeat.

but, i digress. more to the point: what the hell is going on with brooklyn babysitters and their rub-me-down voicemail slow jams?

does anybody else think this is a disturbing trend? i must get to the bottom of it.

I predict the next one you try will have R. Kelly's "I Can't Sleep Baby (If I)"

What weirds ME out is that they're listening to the same music I was listening to 35 years ago, or however long ago it was. First time I heard WAMLAW was in Norway, 1970. Oh baby, I loved that song.

At least it was Sledge's version, and not....(gulp), Michael Bolton. Perhaps they all belong to some nanny/sex cult. Nannies Gone Wild???

Maybe they just figure that anyone not willing to find out who this person is with several minutes of Marvin Gaye in lieu of a voice mail greeting will be kinda boring, and have painfully conventional children. Hence, not worth working for in the first place. Kind of a strange vetting system, but one never knows...

oh man, I was interviewing for nannies several weeks ago, and one had an entire mary j blige song as her greeting - the ENTIRE song. towards the end she mumbled something about leaving a message.
