no more mr nice guy
well, gang. three years and 517 posts later, it's time to stick a fork in this here blog. i think it's done, don't you?
professional and personal obligations have kept me from giving it my best. and those obligations are just getting more and more obligatory. so. it was fun while it lasted and i've loved reading every last one of your comments and emails (and even meeting a few of you). but. it's become more of a chore and a source of guilt than it has been a joy. so, for every season, etc.
i'll still be around, though, lurking in the dark corners of the internets. you just have to know where to look.
my love and gratitude goes out to you all.
well, most of you all. ok, maybe like 11 of you. Eight, tops.

Oh no! No no no no no. No. And I *don't* know where to look, damn it.
sad news! Wish you the best though-
I'm disappointed, but I totally understand. We'll miss you! All the best.
You've really ruined my day.
How can I carry on without your sick humour and outrageous parenting example?
Please don't disappear completely!
Oh, no. Say it ain't so! I've read your blog more faithfully than I have a certain publication over the last 10 months.
But if you insist on ending it, let me just say that publishing 517 funny, compelling and well-written posts is an impressive achievement in itself--especially on top of all your other obligations.
Guess I'll have to seek you out in those dark corners.
Quitters never win!!!!
:)
517 posts is definitely an impressive run. I can barely keep a blog running for a month.
I will miss reading your blog though. I check it every day at work in case there were updates.
Ha. Wow. I discovered your blog 10 days ago and have thoroughly enjoyed blowing off work since then to read all 517 entries in kinda quick succession. I just finished this morning.
So I'm glad I get a chance to say thanks for the tears, the laughter, and the nausea. Would it be too forward of me to say I _luv_ you Mr. Nice Guy? Probably. Embarrassingly goofy? Definitely. But goddamn it if I didn't get some serious warm fuzzies reading your blog. And that was just for the whiskey and ralphing entries.
Okay, I'm off to raise a six month old daughter armed with the names of a couple of decent kid's musicians, fond memories of your sweet turns o' phrase, and the precious knowledge that I'm not alone in simultaneously wanting to hold tight to my baby and run far far away.
Thanks! My best to you and Mrs. and Toddler Nice Guy.
*Insert rockin' 80's montage over slideshow of Mr. Nice Guy blog faves here*
I very much enjoyed reading your blog and the funny daughter stories and felt like I learned something about "cool" when you would spread your love of musicians I certainly have never heard about (me, not cool). Anyway, bummer dude, will miss it.
That is WACK!
I've commented only once before but read your blog since it started. I'm really going to miss your humor and stories, but wish you a rad future.
Noooooooooooo!!! :( :( :(
Please at least share the name of the publication you are writing for so I can subscribe to that magazine! I'm so sad! Mr. Nice Guy has been a daily part of my life for the better part of the last 3 years!
Super sad. Will miss your posts. Oh so funny.
AW, NOOOOO. What a great blog. What a great 517 posts. Thanks for every one.
Goodbye, and thanks.
I wouldn't be too hasty to just delete the blog though, you might change your mind in six months or something. Just leave it where it is and let it gather dust for a while.
I'll keep you in my google reader just in case.
NO NO NO NO NO NO...awwww ok.. Dammit, now what will I check after my NY Post???...Well here's to you Mr. Nice Guy...BRAVO!!!!!!
p.s.. I agree with dan...Let it gather dust for a while...ya never know!!!!
Oh no! I finally got up enough courage to post a comment (last one on the last blog entry) and now you're stopping! PLEASE let us know where else you're writing - you're too funny to not read anymore!
Thanks for all the laughs - it's truly been a pleasuer.

crap! we'll miss you MNG. Seriously and completely. sigh. best of luck to you & family nice guy...
Dear SILNG
Thank you so much for all the insight into your family's lives. This was often the only way to know what went on in your very busy lives. Sit back, drink a single malt, take some time off and reconsider. Toddler nice guy should give you plenty of fodder for this blog, her silver sequined sneakers, her mermaid crown, her beautiful smile, her monies and her love for both mng and png. You have made me laugh like no other and I'll miss your posts. Hoping you'll return sometime.
Love you. MIL Nice Guy.
you'll be missed; I do love that the title of this post is a punchline several years in the making.
let me know if you're ever in detroit. I know where they keep the soul.
aw crap.
yours was the first blog I ever read and the reason I started writing.
thanks everyone. i won't delete this -- it'll stick around, gathering dust as you say. and, knowing me, i may cave in my resolve. it's just that my kid's becoming a person now and it's time to respect her privacy. at least that's where i stand for the time being. life is long, though, so who knows.
Hi Mr. Nice Guy,
I love your blog, but I wish you the best on your future endeavors.
oh i am so depressed! Please don't go, or at least be like Cher and have like 50 farewell posts... PLEASE!!!
Best of luck in all your endeavors!
Hopefully "they" will make your blog a book, I loved reading every minute of it!
As everyone else here, I've enjoyed every post and wish you nothing but the best.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for The Return of Mr. Nice Guy.
I think I am going to die!!! :(
Your blog has been a window into your lives on another coast. I will miss reading all the things that were fit to print, some that weren't, and some that I took issue with, but there they were - in close to real time. Quick insights between phone calls, e mails and instant messages. I hope you find time to keep in touch with your loyal readers, and and the ones who have just discovered how brilliant and wonderful you are. They were not fooled.
love and gratitude back at you (though I'm fairly certain I'm not one of the chosen 8 or 11). happy obligations, but I'll keep the rss open, just in case :)
Just...wow. Yours was literally my first blog obsession...and the inspiration for starting my own blog.
And is it just me, or did anyone else get a little teary-eyed, reading the comments from MILNG and Mater NG???
Anyhoo...good luck and I hope to run into you, again.
I'll miss you, Mr. Nice Guy. Reading your blog was going to be an assignment for some of my freshmen next spring. Ah, well, I'll just have to find another...
Best of luck to you in whatever you choose to do next.
I left my best ever comment on this blog - you've been an inspiration.
I'll be looking out for a jaded "been here, done this, father-to-be of a second-baby blog" soon.
Thanks for writing, and good luck.
Thanks for all the laughs, Mr. Nice Guy. My kid is the same age as yours, so your blog has resonated with me in so many ways. My kid hasn't done a pole dance in the subway, but that's only because we don't have a subway here. As Brian Reagan would say, "Take luck!"
All good things must come to an end. This was one kick ass blog and I shall miss it dearly.
Waaaaaaaaaa
I'm SO bummed! I've loved reading your blog and will truly miss it! Best of luck to you and FNG.
But where will I get my fill of parenting sarcasm?
Good Bye Mr. Nice Guy.
You're the only blogger who makes me laugh out loud. Thanks for the memories.
Cat
Thank you for all the funny. I will miss your take on things.
@#$#$%%!!! I feel like this is my fault. I'm really regretting the idiotic curiosity that led me to unintentionally out you. I'm so sorry I said anything!
Good luck with Mrs. Nice Guy, Daughter Nice Guy, et alia. I'm really going to miss this blog!
Will you please leave it up so I can still read it - you are hilarious and I will miss your writing so, so much.
And if you have another little nice guy, you have to fill us in. x x x Thanks for everything x
i will miss this! i read every week, and LOVE the stories and meanness and goodness. good luck, and thanks.
Thanks so much, Mr. Nice Guy! I'll miss you but will leave you bookmarked in case you ever feel like sharing something with the internets.
I've been reading you since I was pregnant with my now 2.5 year old, so we go way back, though I rarely commented.
I even tried to do a blog of my own, but I lack the discipline required to keep on posting, so I can't blame you for moving on.
Best of luck to you and yours! Thanks again!
Oh, PS - please for us will you go to the park and fly a kite? :)
so glad i got a chance to read you -- and meet you. you really made my day that day. good luck to you kind sir, and keep writing.
Very sad to see you hang up your typing finger. You're one of the best reads out there, so even if it's once in a blue moon, if you have something to share, don't hold back.
Happy travels to the Nice Guy Family.
Thank you for your posts and you'll certainly be missed.
WTF? I leave to go to Arkansas for work and come back to find you hanging up the spurs? Damn! I want my money back.
Don't be a stranger!
Best of luck to you and yours mr nice guy. I'm going to miss your hilarious perspective on the whole parenting gig. Guess I'll just have to get back to the 10am mother's little helper gin and tonic instead.
(If I find out that the real reason you stopped blogging is because you've crossed over to the dark side that is Facebook....)
no, no, no! don't go!!!!
What a great read you were,
still... I bet you were just itching to use that title though weren't you?
Is there like a support group or something..... I feel withdrawl symptoms..... October 15th needs to be made a national day of mourning......
This really sucks. I do wish you all the best, but for 3 years now you have been my favorite escape.... my guilty pleasure....
Your writing is so fresh, so funny.... the net's gonna be a few shades darker without the Mr Nice Guy blog!!
good luck to you, you will be missed!
Thank you Mr Nice Guy,
you have been a partner in fathering, whether you knew it or not. being the first of my friends to become a dad (and a single dad at that - long story), i lent on you (one of only two daddy-type blogs i read) to show me the way and give me an idea of what is coming. i really appreciated that and will miss your words.
Best of luck to you all.
I've been reading your blog for years, you'll be missed. It is kinda funny that Mater Nice Guy commented to this last post. Farewell. :-(
Oh no!
I'll miss you!
Awwww Damn Mr. Nice Guy!!!! This was one of the best blogs in blogland.
........Trail of tears from South Carolina!
Be well and you will truly be missed.
Kinda sounds like your obituary doesn't it? R.I.P.
Buh-mher.
Aw, dude...really? Sucks for us.
Best of luck with those pesky obligations, and know you'll always have a seat at the NY Bloggers Table O' Beers.
Please re-surface when you finally decide to replace your wonky knee with a bionic robo-hinge.
Well, we'll certainly miss your wit, and regret that we didn't get to meet you on our trip to NYC last weekend (that email you didn't get to until after we'd been and gone, alas). Best of luck with everything; here's hoping you come back after some kind of hiatus or something. Thanks so much for sharing!
I keep checking back each day, thinking you're just pulling a nasty joke on us all. I'm a jilted lover who refuses to accept your goodbyes.
:-(
We understand, so please don't feel guilty for letting our hope fall like a broken kite.
Did that make you feel guilty? Good!
I started reading your blog as a peek into the world of those "other" Slark Popers -- the pregnant ones and the ones with kids. Then, when I became part of that crowd (my daughter was born this past March), I started going back and reading a couple of months ahead of wherever I was in the pregnancy/babyhood to find out what was in store for me. Good thing your blog gives me two more years of guidance -- guess I'll have to figure out the rest on my own.
Best of luck to you and your family.
Wha?......awh.......sigh.
Reading your blog allowed me to have one of those time-stopping self-reflective moments in between the flurry of these parenting daze.
Plus, my dh and I could snort and snicker together....
Which corner do ya think you'll hide in...
I understand the privacy thang....Maybe you can leave out the details and blog in general terms...
I've thoroughly enjoyed every single one of your posts. I will miss the snorts and guffaws I get during my morning coffee...take care Mr Nice Guy..and stay nice! The Walshes
your wry humor will be missed ; (
11 people care, yeah right! Thanx for the dust gathering. I just found you last year, and I guess now it's time to read the archives. I laugh til I cry reading your stuff. How old is your kid, 3? I'm a bad mother and all, but I still write about my 15 year old daughter. Just sayin. .
oh no! i've been reading you since both mrs. nice guy and i were pregnant. it was always my dream to get our girls together. a friend of mine from paris even secretly thought she'd run into you while visiting the the spring. if she had, it would have been the highlight of her trip! you have brightened more grey days than you will ever know. thank you!!!
Rock on MNG! Until next time...
Sorry to see you go.
Best wishes for your future. You will be missed!
sad news, but i wanted to tell you that i've enjoyed reading every word of this here blog. you are completely hilarious. i hope your life is filled with hilarity!
In this last week I have had to take 5 links off my sidebar for one reason or another...mannnnn this is getting boring. Sure will miss you dude, you gave me many a chuckle.
I'm left with: http://www.izzlepfaff.com/
He's almost as funny as you.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Please -- even an occasional post would be fine.
No guilt. Really.
oh, i'm sorry you're going!
Great. I finally check my neglected Google Reader with its 300+ posts, and THIS is what I read?!?! Very sad. Please don't pull down your blog though. Every now and then I need to read the 'locking yourself out of your apartment' post for a good laugh.
Best of luck to you and the little misses and daughter. And, I totally understand the desire to keep some things private for your daughter. My oldest now turns to me and says, "No, you cannot put this on your blog" when she sees me reaching for a piece of paper and a pen. Sigh. My muse is growing up. Fortunately, I have two more too young to know any better (yet).
Nooo! I have to admit I'm not a blog reader but I've been faithfully following your blog for the last two years. Before we moved to NYC from California I became paranoid (neurotic?, yes we moved to the UES) about what it would be like for my husband and I to raise a child in NYC. (no child yet, however, we enjoyed vicariously living through your humorous life experiences). I think I landed on your blog by googling nyc subway pregnancy and baby or something to that effect. I will now have only the nytimes to read about children growing up in NYC and how day care damages them permenantly and you should only feed your child organic food and they may still end up at only a liberal arts college and not Harvard. I will miss your realistic parenting approach and I hope that there are more well-grounded parents around the ny area tot-lots when we decide to have a child, because I've only seen scary neurotic parents in our neighborhood.
It's all about the reunion tour, that's where the big bucks are. Very clever indeed. Farewell Mr. Nice Guy, we hardly knew ye.
PS It's almost like being alive for your own funeral. Maybe I should "retire" my blog for a day, 77 comments would give me a woody.
Bummer, Mr. Nice guy,
I know how you feel though. What the hey, maybe you'll end up like Jericho, coming back for one last season.
:)
zoe
So sad for us. Thanks for all the laughs.
Nah-uh, you can't just leave like that, no sir...
I can't recall how I found you but I've been a loyal reader for many, many months! As time allowed, I would go back and read the older posts I never got to... each one of them simply brilliant.
So this is really a bummer... to say the least.
You will be sorely missed. I'll still keep you in my faves and check up on you once in a while, to see if I can be pleasantly surprised by a new post.
Sad, sad day. Best of luck to you and your family.
From neighboring CT. Ness
I'm sorry to see you go, but I understand, too. You'll be missed. :D
MNG...you're serious aren't you?
*sigh*
Wow, three years. This was the first blog I ever read and now I am hooked to about 200, but yours is a favorite for the quality writing. Take care, and maybe just take a break and return!
Cheers
Dude, you are MAJOR DUDENESS!
Me and my babe are going to miss all your stories about you and your babes.
T-Bone and BeeBee
Damn!
I don't have any kids and am not even close to having any, but nonetheless, I really enjoyed reading your posts. Thanks for all the laughs.
If a follow-up is ever written for A Confederacy of Dunces, you should be the author.
Oh,sure. I go out and have a baby and when I come back... you're done. Not cool. Not cool at all.
That's it! No more babies for me.
I'll miss you. But just a little bit of you. Maybe one eighth of you. Okay. One twenty-fifth.
best post title ever. saddest too. i'll miss you mr. nice guy.
I've seen that first photo before and am still impressed by how level she managed to keep her drink.
