more urgent matters of state

new dad jason kottke asks only the most important questions about fatherhood:
When your child is of an appropriate age to start watching movies, in which order will you show him/her the six Star Wars movies? By original release date (Star Wars, Empire, Jedi, Phantom Menace, Clones, Sith) or according to the intra-movie chronology (Phantom Menace, Clones, Sith, Star Wars, Empire, Jedi)?
what would you do? WHAT WOULD DO? me, i'd probably protect my spawn from the three prequels entirely. just shield her from the fact that they were ever made.

Oh no no no. You must carefully teach.

You must make them watch, repeatedly, IV, V and VI. Many times. Then, when they are lest expecting it, hit them with I, II and III.

I guarantee they will look at you with wide eyes, unveiled to the horrors of the world, and stammer in shock, "There is someone WORSE than Mark Hammil in these movies??!"

And thus the wheel of time turns.

I'm with you, MNG. Forget the prequels ever existed. Stick with the good stuff.

Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and then I'll edit out all the Ewok shit and show the rest of Return.

After that -- she's on her own.

I dunno about Krissy's answer. Kids I know love the first 3, especially the 3rd one which mortifies me to no end.("NOOOOOOO"). And they saw IV-VI a bunch.

I'm hoping that the first three are wiped off the pop culture map by the time my kid is of watching age.

Plus, look at what the first three teach your kid: love is a frolic by an Italian villa, child birth is painless and the Force is basically a virus.

We thought the phantom menace was the least scary, so he watched it first, though i was all for original release date and skipping the prequels if possible

hmmm....very good question. but i'm afraid i don't have a good answer since dear hubby of mine already showed all 6 episodes to our three and five year old!!!

that is what happens when you leave the boys home with daddy.

now my three year old suggests at preschool that they sing star wars whenever the teacher asks if the kids want to sing any particular song.

i'm actually ok with them seeing IV, V and VI. just not ok with them watching I, II and III, especially III.
