cinco de mayo is supposed to be about independence, after all

every morning now the missus and i wake up and look deeply into each other's eyes, lost in connubial bliss. ahh, a new day! we embrace, thankful to have our health and each other. then, gradually, i can just barely make out the black cloud of terror that slowly fogs over her cornea. without fail, one of us will say with an almost imperceptible shudder of horror: "one day closer to baby."

but you know what? as a friend pointed out, 05/05/05 would be a really cool birthday, wouldn't it?

yes. yes, it would ... for someone else's kid.

When that baby comes, take every opportunity to put your nose against its skin and sniff as deeply as you can. It's a wonderful scent like no other and it will stick to you for the rest of your life. Try to be in the delivery room. It's a horrible place -- cold and impersonal. But when you make eye contact with your newborn, you will see that it already has a personality. You will instantly fall in love.

Im sorry Lone Ranger, but who sees a new baby and goes "Mmmmmm, I think I might smell this"????

Is it a diagnosed fetish?

Wait until the first bath for that smelling. Freshly born babies, I assume, smell like blood and that gray stuff, whatever it is.

There is, however, nothing better than newly-bathed baby smell. It's intoxicating.

that "gray stuff" is vernix, and, weirdly, it smells wonderful. in fact, the clean head of a baby smells wonderful, too-- probably evolution's little way of ensuring that we actually think we *want* to be around a screaming, yowling newborn. seriously, though: if only that scent could be bottled....
